Reducing disparities in therapy utilization through community-based participatory research. The objectives of this study include: 1) employing a robust, community-based participatory research process (Boot Camp Translation) to create a novel developmental screening and therapy decision aid for use in pediatric primary care settings; 2) determining the feasibility and acceptability of the decision aid in a pediatric primary care setting; and 3) testing the clinical effectiveness of the decision aid (relative to standard care) in rates enhancing shared decision-making and increasing therapy utilization rates. ($360,000)

Promoting Early Identification and Intervention for Children with or at Risk for Developmental Delay. The primary objective of this pilot project is to inform the dissemination and evaluation of a community-based tool that (1) enhances shared decision-making between caregivers, family members, and service providers, and (2) improves early identification and intervention for children with or at risk for DD. This aligns with our broader goal of developing a community translational research agenda that raises awareness, highlights the importance of community-based solutions, and reduces racial/ethnic disparities in the early identification of children with DD living in the 2040 footprint, and their use of early intervention services. ($30,000)

Interdisciplinary Research Leadership Program. The long-term goal of this project is to enhance the integration and alignment of clinical services and social supports through community-based participatory research. Objectives: 1) To understand where families spend their time in the community and who they look to for advice we will conduct a social network analysis. This information will be used to inform the development of relationships and referral networks between clinical services and social supports; 2) To understand the benefits and challenges of system integration we will administer a survey to key stakeholders (clinical partners, social service and community partners, and parents); 3) To understand parent concerns regarding the collection and sharing of information across systems we will conduct semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions.

Development of a novel decision aid to improve early identification and intervention for children with developmental delay. The objectives of this study include: 1) assessing community beliefs regarding the help-seeking pathway for children with developmental delay, 2) identifying factors that promote or impede the integration of standard developmental surveillance screening guidelines and pediatric therapy service recommendations with community beliefs, and 3) developing a novel decision aid that integrates evidence-based guidelines and service recommendations.
