Clinical Ethics Director Lead Ethics Consultant, Co-Chair for Clinical Ethics Committees for UCHealth and UCHealth CU Hospital

Chelsey Patten joined the Center for Bioethics and Humanities as the Director for Clinical Ethics in October of 2023. In addition to this role, she is co-medical director of the Ethics Consult Service at University of Colorado Hospital, lead ethics consultant at Children’s Hospital Colorado, and a Senior Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics, Section of Palliative Medicine. Chelsey sits on the ethics committees at both University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado.  

Chelsey has a passion for clinical ethics consultation and has performed over 850 consults as lead consultant between 2018-2023. She also has a strong interest in clinical ethics consultation data, regarding its impact on program growth, policy development, and identification of ethics education needs, as well as developing national benchmarking standards for clinical ethics consultation services.

Prior Experience

Prior to joining the center, Chelsey successfully facilitated substantial clinical ethics program growth for a large hospital system in North Carolina and a large academic medical center in Illinois. She also served as a member of National POLST and helped develop recommendations for states that wish to develop POLST registries.
