Celebrating Our Students & Alumni

Supporting the next generation of health leaders

September 2022

Etched on the seal of every University of Colorado diploma is a Greek phrase that translates as “Let your light shine.” Those four powerful words not only capture the essence of convocation, marking a celebratory end to an academic journey, they also embody the spirit of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, one that supports lifelong learners to be their best selves.

At CU Anschutz, we are committed to offering a rich, supportive experience for those learners as they explore diverse fields and prepare to shape the healthcare landscape of tomorrow. With private support for scholarships and programs, we bring a world-class education into reach for students with different backgrounds and career aspirations.

Support for students today is an investment in the next generation of leaders in health and medicine,” said Donald M. Elliman, chancellor of the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. “Scholarships offer invaluable resources for attracting bright students and helping them make the most of their education, ensuring they leave CU Anschutz ready to make an impact.

Gifts to these areas open the door to educational possibilities for our students, regardless of circumstance. By lessening the burden of debt, we bolster their ability to change the future of medicine and to leave a lasting mark on the world.

"The Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation believes dental health is critical to overall health, and we are dedicated to ensuring Colorado’s dental workforce represents the population it serves. Through the Delta Dental of Colorado Dean’s Distinguished Scholarship for Oral Health Equity, we provide scholarship support to dedicated students at the CU School of Dental Medicine as they pursue their careers in dentistry and serve as champions for accessible healthcare. These scholars represent our next generation of oral health leaders and our work to ensure all our residents have access to quality care.”

From scholarships and financial aid to mental health support, there are numerous ways we are investing in student success and expanding opportunities. Over the past several years, CU Anschutz has seen an increase in commitments to scholarships through programs like the Dean’s Distinguished Scholarship, a recognition program to encourage philanthropic support for scholarships on campus. Thanks to investments from our philanthropic community, the campus now has more than 300 funds supporting students at all phases of their education.

Once again, in times of crisis and uncertainty, our community has proven we are strong and deeply supportive of one another. After the widespread devastation caused by the Marshall and Middle Fork fires in Boulder County in December 2021, the CU community sprang into action. We made emergency resources available for students and employees who were directly affected by the tragedy through the CU Anschutz Emergency Relief Fund and CU Anschutz Student Support Fund.

Scholarships have more than financial value – for students, it’s knowing that someone believes in them; and that they are encouraged to follow their dreams. CU School of Medicine alumnus, George “Doc” Lopez, MD ’73, is just one example of the far-reaching impact of scholarships. Lopez received early scholarship support to attend the CU School of Medicine his junior year, and he credits that support with providing access to experiences and opportunities that effectively defined his 47-year medical career.

I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t gotten into medical school. The best way to ensure others have the same opportunities I did is to invest in the next generation of medical students.”

Class of ’73
A worry of mine was the cost of medical school, especially having fewer years than the average student in which to pay back student loans. But being selected as a recipient of the generous gift from Dr. Lopez has lifted that worry from my mind. The scholarship I received is allowing me to concentrate on school – on performing well and on immersing myself in it – so that I become the best doctor I can be, driven not by money or earning potential but by the passion to serve patients in whichever specialty feels like the best fit to allow me to do so; at this time, I am mainly considering primary care for the future. The scholarship has also been a reminder that I do belong here and that others believe in me – that I will succeed in my studies and that I will be a good doctor. I’m excited to one day pay this generosity forward on to the next generation.”
