Aurora |
The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is located in the heart of one of Colorado's most economically challenged and under-served regions. Aurora has some of the highest rates of health problems and greatest economic needs in the state. In fact, 10.7% of residents live below the poverty line, and the per capita annual income is $30,504. Aurora is also one of the most racially and ethnically diverse communities in Colorado and serves as a gateway to many immigrants and refugees coming to live in Colorado. According to the most recent census data, 28.6% of Aurora residents are of Hispanic or Latino heritage, 44.4% of residents are white alone (not Hispanic or Latino), 16.5% are Black or African American, 6.5% are Asian, 0.9% are American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.4% are Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and 5.2% or residents report two or more races. Additionally, 20.1% of residents are foreign born, 33% of residents speak a language other than English at home, and over 150 languages are spoken in Aurora Public Schools. The location of an anchor institution, such as the University, in the midst of this community presents opportunities, economic and otherwise, for mutually beneficial collaborations. |
