Paperwork should be submitted no less than 3 weeks before the first day on campus as this step may require an in-person appointment to be scheduled once the student arrives on campus.
To enroll in EHS medical surveillance for the first time, complete the three steps outlined below and submit your documents via email to Occupational.Health@cuanschutz.edu
CU: Disease Prevention and Control in the Animal Housing Facilities
CU: Standard Operating Procedures in the Animal Housing Facilities
CANVAS
The University email address (or, if the student is on campus, their personal email address) needs to be sent by the mentor or administrator of the program to the OLAR Training Supervisor, OLAR Office.
Once the student is added to the system, they must watch all the videos and complete all the quizzes. Successful completion of each quiz unlocks the ability to view the following video.
To begin the courses on Canvas 2023, use the link below to access the videos and quizzes. The password is four zeros (0000) to access.
All training will be required before access to the vivaria can be granted but can occur concurrently with all other steps required to conduct animal research.
Adding students to IACUC Protocol
The student must complete a Personnel Qualifications Form, including all of the Protocols the they will be working with. The Principal Investigator must sign the form and send to the IACUC@cuanschutz.edu.
The Principal Investigator should request that the student be added to the applicable protocols.
Completed Skillsoft courses listed above are required before being added to the protocol. Completed Clearance by Occupational Health for the species on protocol must be in place before being added to the protocol. Please see the Occupational Health Training Tab for more information.
Access Tour
Once the student has completed all steps and has been added to a protocol, an access tour and any additional required trianing will be scheduled with OLAR to complete the access process.
If the student completes the steps before arriving on campus, OLAR can work with the mentor to schedule the access tour for one of the first days on campus.
Make sure to schedule the student’s appointment to pick up their badge before the OLAR Access tour.
After the tour, the students' badges will be activated, and they can work with animals.
Anticipated Timeline for Access
The access process can take 2-6 weeks, depending on whether an in-person Occupational Health Appointment is required. Many of the steps can be completed before the student’s arrival. It is recommended that all steps above are completed as early as possible before the student’s arrival on campus to prevent delays of several weeks before laboratory and animal research work can occur.
Occupational Health Clearance and Biosafety Protocol
All students working with animals must be cleared by Occupational Health before being added to a protocol. Please see the Occupational Health Training Tab for more information
All students working with biohazards must be added to the IBC protocol before working with genetically modified materials/animals or hazards. Please see the Biosafety protocol section for more information
