TRACK I

In August or September, the program starts with an orientation where members can meet with their cohort and UPP alumni. The focus is on building community and becoming acclimated to the program's expectations and objectives.

The academies occur on one Saturday each month during the academic year and will be in-person or virtual. Distinguished University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus faculty, staff, students, and community partners facilitate workshops, seminars, and training. Academies are intended to broaden members' understanding of professionalism, career readiness, research, evaluation, current events, policies used in health promotion, health services, and health disparities. 

Track I Outcomes

• Research Skills Development:
  • Participants will gain foundational knowledge in research, including proposal writing, abstract creation, literature reviews, and research methodology. 
  • Students will learn how to effectively communicate research findings through written or oral presentations. 
• Professionalism and Career Readiness:
  • Participants will understand the unwritten rules of professionalism in academic settings, through seminars focusing on etiquette, ethical behavior, and communication. 
  • Students will develop skills needed to succeed in graduate school and healthcare careers, including networking, time management, and leadership. 

Track I

Exposure to Healthcare & Research Careers (Summer Intensive):

• Participants will explore diverse career paths in healthcare through career exploration and interactions with professionals in fields. 
• Participants will have a clearer understanding of career opportunities, required qualifications, and pathways to enter the healthcare field and/or graduate education; including tracks at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Track I 2-Week

• Healthcare & Research Exposure 
• Service Learning & Teaching Experience:
  • Students will engage in service learning by teaching and mentoring middle school students during the summer intensive, helping to develop communication, teaching, and leadership skills. 
  • This experience will foster a deeper understanding of community engagement, education, and the importance of service in healthcare. 
• Emergency Medicine Training & Certification
  • Students will gain hands-on experience and certification in emergency medicine, preparing them for critical roles in healthcare and emergency response.  
  • Along with will developing practical skills in patient care, crisis management, and medical response in emergencies. 

  
  

Track II 6-8 weeks

Second-year students are paired with labs for paid research positions in Biomedical or Translational Research. Or will be paired in clinical spaces for medical observations.
