GOOD TROUBLE AWARD

Up to four winners will be selected each year.  Nominations are sought in any of the following categories:*

1. Full-time (> 0.50 FTE) Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) faculty member;
2. Resident or fellow in any ACGME-approved training program;
3. Full-time (> 0.50 FTE) staff member, who has made significant contributions to programs focusing on advocacy, health equity, or community engagement;
4. Student currently enrolled in a degree program in the CU/AMC College of Nursing or the School of Medicine, Public Health, Dental Medicine, or Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as trainees within the Graduate School (including Post Docs);
5. Community leader who is a Colorado resident and who has contributed significantly to the health and resilience of communities near, or with close connections to, the Anschutz Medical Campus; and
6. Community program or community-campus collaboration that has contributed significantly to the health and resilience of communities near, or with close ties to, the Anschutz Medical Campus

*Candidates for the award should be engaged in meaningful work promoting equity and justice in health care and society beyond their primary responsibilities as students, residents, trainees, staff members, or faculty members.  All nominees must be living.  Two or more nominees can be considered together for a single award, if they have collaborated closely on a single deserving project.

Award winners will have:

• Demonstrated a profound commitment to civic engagement, challenged existing practices or policies, inspired others, and advocated for fairness, justice, and basic human rights.
• Demonstrated leadership and inspired others in efforts to achieve social justice and greater equity in health care and society.
• Demonstrated integrity, courage, and commitment, by working to further the ideals that John Lewis, the late Congressman and civil rights leader, stood for when he wrote, "When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have to speak up.  You have to say something; you have to do something."
• Demonstrated impact: Preference will be given to nominees whose work has created change and "moved the needle" toward equity and justice, in large ways or small.  We realize it can take years or even decades to show change, and this will be taken under consideration based on the scope of the nominee's work.

A letter of nomination and one to three letters of support must accompany the nomination.  Nomination packets must be submitted as a single PDF document.  The nominee's curriculum vitae or resume must also be included.  Nominating and supporting letters should indicate how the letter writer knows the nominee and for what period of time.  Letters should state clearly how the nominee has met the spirit of John Lewis and the selection criteria listed above.  Letters should indicate the manner in which the nominee has gone beyond their assigned roles to advocate for equity and justice in healthcare and in society.  Please address any questions to Nephatearia Jenkins at Nephatearia.Jenkins@cuanschutz.edu.

Nomination packets will be reviewed by a diverse committee appointed by the CU Anschutz Medical Campus Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement; that committee will recommend winners of the John Lewis Good Trouble Award to the Chancellor.
