True North:
Navigating the Ethical Future of Health Care Leadership

September 11-14, 2022
Aspen, Colorado

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the structural inequities of the health care system and the ethical dilemmas faced by health care leaders as they respond to these challenges. The Aspen Ethical Leadership (AELP) program is once again gathering in person to provide attendees with an opportunity to grapple with wicked problems as part of a carefully selected and intimate cohort using our hallmark case-study format with ripped-from-the-headlines situations faced every day by health care leaders. Attendees will have a rare space to build their ethical leadership capacities while engaging a network of connected professionals who share their commitment to ethical leadership.

Our unique format and curated roster of speakers and attendees provides space to explore the ethical issues of the moment in a caring, collegial, and confidential environment. The case-study format and AELP methodology provide a practical framework for developing skills for ethical awareness, deliberative assessment, and strategic values-driven action.

“This is the meeting I attend to reconnect with my north star.”
– Fred Southwick, MD, Professor, University of Florida College of Medicine

About the Program

The toughest ethical challenges faced by health care leaders are almost always politically contentious, extremely complex, and emotionally fraught. The knowledge and practical skills required for ethical leadership are rarely taught in health professional or business schools. As a result, health care executives need a welcoming and safe space where they can acquire and practice ethical leadership skills to address these challenges.

Working with and building on Professor Mary Gentile’s Giving Voice to Values program, the AELP has developed a practical Triple-A framework for building ethical awareness, analysis, and action skills specifically oriented to health care leaders. The program is centered on experiential and small-group activities as well as formal and informal opportunities for learning how to address the most challenging ethical issues confronting health care leaders today.

“Every day I face dilemmas navigating unsettled science with competing interests. This conference helps me with moral distress and implementing decisions.”  -  Sharon Levine, MD
