Study Abroad and Financial Aid

Know before you go.

You may be eligible to receive financial aid for authorized study abroad programs, if the study abroad courses fulfill CU Anschutz degree requirements. Authorized study abroad programs usually include: CU Denver|Anschutz faculty-led programs, approved independent study abroad programs offered through other accredited U.S. schools or study abroad coordinating agencies, approved international exchange programs, and traditional study abroad programs at foreign schools approved by and coordinated through the Office of Global Education/Study Abroad.

To be considered for financial aid, you must apply by completing the appropriate year’s FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Most federal, state, and institutional sources of financial aid for which a student may normally qualify, with the exception of work-study, certain scholarships, the CU Tuition Waiver Benefit, and the CU Dependent Tuition Waiver Option, are eligible to pay towards costs associated with authorized study abroad programs. There may be scholarships available to support study abroad. You must be enrolled at least half-time on the CU Anschutz records system for the semester(s) in which you are participating in the study abroad program. Once you have selected a study abroad program, contact the  Office of Global Education/Study Abroad to receive approval to travel to the country in which your study abroad program is located.  Then, you must submit the CU Anschutz Study Abroad Financial Aid Request Form to the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office (FASO). The total amount of financial aid cannot exceed your cost of attendance for the study abroad program and regular enrolled courses at CU Anschutz. Students that have reached the annual aggregate limit for Federal Direct subsidized and unsubsidized loans may need to consider applying for a PLUS loan or an alternative student loan.
